In Akron, NY Shane documents a community’s fight to protect their affordable housing. Produced with support from the Economic Hardship Reporting Project.

Shane’s latest monograph ‘Still (Noon)’ launches this Thursday 7th June at Dashwood Books NYC from 6-8pm and is now available to pre-order.

The second in a series on New Orleans, Shane shoots the city’s Bayou St. John area for Curbed. The bayou’s relationship with New Orleans began in 1708 as traders searched for an easier way to ship goods to the city, and today holds some of the oldest residences in New Orleans.

Shane was commissioned by Curbed to photograph the area and residents of Bywater, New Orleans. Today, Bywater is one of the city’s most beloved neighbourhoods, but there is much debate about its rapidly evolving future: Since the neighbourhood was nearly spared from Hurricane Katrina due to its relatively high elevation, new residents and developers have been attracted to its maintained architecture and low flood risk.

Shane was invited by the NFNA, a community-based agriculture and farming program, to follow the stories of refugees and recent immigrants in America’s whitest state, Vermont.

About the Artist

Born in Burlington, Vermont. Shane received a BFA in Fine Art from Tufts University in partnership with The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He is best known for landscape and portrait photography that has a narrative and documentary focus. He is regularly published in various magazines and publications including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire, Vice Magazine and The Guardian. He has been widely exhibited and included in numerous private and public collections such as The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Musee de l’Elysee, Lausanne. In 2010 he was commissioned by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta to contribute to the prestigious ‘Picturing the South’ project that they later exhibited. He expanded on this series in his monograph ‘One Sun, One Shadow’ published in 2016 and will follow this up in 2018 with his second title ‘Still (Noon)’ which itself is an extension of the work he produced for a commission by Fotostiftung Schweiz (in collaboration with Musee de l’Eysee). He lives in Syracuse, New York.

Still (Noon)
Edition Patrick Frey
2018

In 2017, Shane was commissioned by Fotostiftung Schweiz to photograph a dozen Swiss towns with a view to piecing together a portrait of the country as a whole, away from the usual stereotypes. About eighty years ago Theo Frey, one of the leading figures in early Swiss photojournalism, shared the same itinerary. Regarded as the European pioneer of long-term documentary projects and a “subtle chronicler of village life” Frey photographed the same towns for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1939. Still (Noon) juxtaposes these old and new views of rural life in Switzerland to offer up an unusual and moving portrait of a nation.

One Sun, One Shadow
Self-Published
2016

“One Sun, One Shadow” is an extension of the body of work that Lavalette originally produced for the High Museum of Art, Atlanta for their 2012 exhibition, “Picturing the South”. Native to the Northeast, it was primarily through traditional music — the sounds of old time, blues, and gospel — that Lavalette had formed a relationship with the South. With that in mind, the region’s rich musical history became the natural entry point for this project and the resulting photographs.

Unfamiliar Familiarities - Outside Views on Switzerland
Lars Muller
2017

For this publication, and for an exhibition of the same name opening in 2017 at the Musee de l’Elysée, Lavalette and four other internationally renowned photographers were invited to scrutinise Switzerland in their capacity as independent, subjective, and sensitive observers; unrestricted by any advertising commission.
