Martina Hoogland Ivanow, is a visual artist known for her poetic and profoundly atmospheric work that spans photography, film, sculpture, sound & animation. She earned her BA in Fine Art with a major in photography at Parsons School of Design (After a successful journey in fashion photography across New York, London, and Paris, she returned to Stockholm in the early 2000s. Here she shifted her focus toward personal documentary based art projects where she continued to share her work through exhibitions and publications, taking on commercial & editorial projects when she could. (and gained her post-master from Stockholm’s royal Institute of Art).
Her style is characterised by dark, dreamlike aesthetics, a mastery of light and shadow, and a resistance to overt clarity where the subtle lowlights and the absence of light shift the focus and draw the viewer into a magical visual world that reveals the complexity and contradictions of existence rather than laying out explicit narratives. Critics describe her imagery as cinematic, dreamlike, and imbued with a psychoanalytical or mythic quality.
Her earlier career fused portraiture and fashion editorial sensibilities with intimate personal vision, blending contributions to magazines like Dazed & Confused and AnOther with deeply personal artistic expression. During this fertile period she collaborated with brands, designers and creatives such as Miu Miu, Prada, David James, Katy England, Alister Mackie, Camille BW & Alexander McQueen. with deeply personal artistic expression.
