About the Artist

Nadav Kander is a London based photographer, artist and director renowned for his portraiture and large-format landscape photographs. He was born in Israel, but grew up in Johannesburg and moved to London in 1982 to begin his career in earnest. Nadav’s exceptional work spans over three decades and he has produced some of the most iconic images of our era.

He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker, TIME and The New York Times Magazine who in 2009 devoted an entire issue to Obama’s People: 52 portraits of President Obama’s inaugural administration. In 2012 Nadav exhibited at London’s National Portrait gallery as part of a prestigious series of artist commissions by the Olympic Committee. His advertising work continues to build with the recent additions to his portfolio of Cartier and Hennessy. His conceptual portrait work has resulted in a three year relationship with the Almeida Theatre in London producing their artwork. The last few years have also seen him producing imagery for the promotion for shows like Gone Girl, Mr Robot, The Sinner and the Sky success, Chernobyl. He enjoys a close working relationship with a lot of his former sitters which have lead to private portrait commissions.

In 2009 Kander was awarded the Prix Pictet for his ‘Yangtze, The Long River’ series and named International Photographer of the Year at the 7th Annual Lucie Awards. He also received awards from the Art Director’s Club and IPA in the USA, the D&AD and the John Kobal Foundation in the UK and Epica in Europe.

Other accolades include 1st prize in the Staged Portraits – Singles category for World Press Photo Award (2013), Silver Photographer of the Year Award at Lianzhou International Photo Festival (2008) in China and Royal Photographic Society’s ‘Terence Donovan’ Award (2005 and 2007). Nadav received an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society (2015), and Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award from Sony World Photography Awards (2019).

His work is housed in several public collections and he has exhibited internationally at venues including Les Rencontres d’Arles, Musée de l’Élysée, Lausanne, Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne, The Photographer’s Gallery, Somerset House and The Barbican in London, and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Books

The Meeting
Steidl Verlag
2019

The first book dedicated his portraiture, this collection shows the range and nuance of Kander’s work. With his minimal and intuitive approach, Kander shows his interest in universal experience, which transcends the specificity of public persona or status. His enigmatic depictions of actors, artists, musicians, authors, sports icons and political leaders are layered and penetrating, revealing unexpected moments of reverie and vulnerability.

Dust

When Nadav Kander learned of the existence of two “closed” cities on the border between Kazakhstan and Russia, he knew that he would have to visit them. For Dust he photographed the desolated landscapes of the Aral Sea and captured fascinating images of the restricted military zones of Priozersk and Kurtchatov, which did not appear on any map until well after the end of the Cold War.

Bodies. 6 Women, 1 Man
Hatje Cantz
2013

Nadav Kander was inspired by ideas of Elizabethan purity to create these stunning photographic portraits of six nude females and one male. Terms such as “sculptural” and “monumental” are often applied to artworks that are neither. But Kander has created an unnerving stone-like serenity in these portraits.

Yangtze, The Long River
Hatje Cantz
2010

Nadav Kander creates images in an age of radical change: in a series awarded the famed Prix Pictet in 2009, he photographed China in the process of revolution. Traveling along the Yangtze River, he took serene pictures of people haplessly facing overwhelming change. As Kander himself says: “China is a nation that appears to be severing its roots by destroying its past in the wake of the sheer force of its moving ‘forward’ at such an astounding and unnatural pace. People scarring their country, and a country scarring its people.“

‘Beauty’s Nothing’ is composed of chapters of images, interleaved with short stories, poems, and essays, each responding to a particular image or section. Each sequence elaborates a narrative, at times driven by the commissioned texts and often arising from the friction between two dissociated images.
