Christopher was born in Canada in 1968 to British and Canadian parents, who soon relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. He was introduced to photography by his father, who had a built a rudimentary darkroom in their basement, but it was not until Christopher lived with a group of artists in Montreal whilst studying biochemistry at McGill University that he discovered photography for himself, and it was not until he landed in London for a postgraduate degree in genetic engineering at University College that he considered it as a possible career. Four months shy of its completion, he left his PhD program to pursue photography in earnest. On a whim and a prayer.

Initially splitting his time between London and Paris working in the fashion industry, his first breaks came at BLITZ magazine, quickly followed by Glamour, Paris Vogue and L’oumo Vogue along with campaigns for Trussardi, Etro and Issey Miyaki. After 6 short years in fashion, he returned to the states in 1997 and embarked on what would be a career changing journey across America, to document the landscape with a minimalist approach that has become his signature style. With the resulting monograph STATES (powerhouse 2000), Griffith had found a unique voice of distilling images down to the most fundamental and graphic elements. The publication of STATES also saw a quick shift from fashion into the world of advertising with campaigns for BA, Deutche Bank, Chrysler, SWISS and Hewlett Packard.

During the past 10 years, Christopher has balanced his time between personal projects and steady work in the ad world. With the subsequent monographs FALL (powerhouse 2004) a macro analysis of the stunning show of colour and texture in Autumn leaves, and recently BLOWN (Auditorium Editions 2009) an abstract study of blown out tyre treads collected from the highways across America. His books have all won a variety of awards from D&AD, Art Directors Club, Communication Arts and Graphis. His 4th title is due in spring 2011 and he is presently working on a much larger project on NYC.

In 2007 he bought a dilapidated 1800’s Dutch cow barn on the Hudson River in upstate NY which he and his partner LVMH Creative Director Rebecca O’Donnell have converted into a country home and studio. Recently the couple had their first child named August. They live in Brooklyn, NY.
